ILEA’s Executive Director recently represented both ILEA and the Ottawa Carleton District School Board at a convention and workshops for educators in Sweden. Constantine Ioannou attended the Stockholm Summit for educational leaders and represented on inclusive practices for schools – this was a continuation based of a similar workshop that was presented in Stockholm in 2010. In addition, Constantine was asked to speak to the education committee of the Swedish Parliament and did so at an early breakfast meeting. His topic to members of parliament and staff included the success of Ontario schools, the benefits of instructional coaching and in particular his observations of this in relation to language teaching and learning. As well, Constantine visited the city of Lidköping where he had the opportunity to present to educators, visit schools that are involved with technology in education and connect with other language educators. Travel in Lidköping included a visit to a high school that operates many language programs (beyond Swedish and English, programs are available in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian and soon Chinese) – the website of the school is here: http://lidkoping.se/delagardie and a description of Constantine’s visit is located on the school website. More information on the experiences in Sweden will be highlighted in the next newsletter – due out in early summer.
